BISAC: Fiction / Christian / General

When Clark Carter discovers 16-year-old Rollo, a German POW, hiding on his family’s property, he’s completely shocked. Even more stunning is the fact that the boy is actually alive. Everyone in Weeping Willow was told that the young soldier from the prisoner of war labor camp had drowned. Since Clark has been trying to regain his dad’s trust, he thinks reporting an enemy soldier to the camp commander might accomplish this goal. Clark, however, pities the German boy who is hungry and terrified. His decision is complicated by the rumor that the bridge collapse which supposedly caused Rollo’s death was no accident; Rollo could actually be in real danger.

Clark decides to hide Rollo, and enlists the help of his neighbor, Miss Mamie. Hair-raising, near-discoveries of Rollo by family members and local citizens leave Clark anxious and fearful. He believes he’ll lose his dad’s trust forever, if it’s ever discovered that he helped the enemy. Matters grow worse when Clark’s older brother declares he would have shot the German if he’d lived.

In the end, Clark realizes that the series of hard choices he has made has led him to the knowledge that harboring unforgiveness can be as dangerous as harboring a fugitive.
