Hi: My full name is Lauren Elizabeth Compere, but I go by Lauren (sometimes Lo Lo). Granddaddy’s full name is William Arthur Compere, but he goes by Art. Granddaddy is the one telling the stories, but for two reasons he wants it to look like I’m telling them. For one reason, Granddaddy says the stories will be more meaningful if they are told by a seventh-grade girl who drives her power chair into the school auditorium each Friday morning before classes begin and tells a Bible story to all who come in. The second reason is that since I’m cripple, he can give a disability to either an animal or to a person in the story. And he does. The sheep that failed to show up to be counted was my pet lamb with its right front hoof not fully developed. I named it False Foot, and we searched for it until we found it. We wouldn’t dare leave a lamb with a bad foot out all night where a predator could easily run off with it.
In another story I was the one with a disability. When Jesus came to our town to get a donkey nobody had ridden, he chose my donkey. I had not ridden Droopy Head, because I was cripple, and Droopy Head would not let anybody else ride him. He was waiting on me. Jesus healed me just like he did False Foot, but I still didn’t ride Droopy Head until after Jesus did.
You might think I’m ticked off at God for having me born this way. You see, my being cripple is not from falling off a horse or diving into a shallow pool. I was born this way. But why should I get ticked off at God? God does everything for a reason. Besides, I get to do things you don’t get to do. I play wheelchair-soccer. Do you? And I got to meet Joni Eareckson Tada when she came to First Baptist Church at Jackson, Mississippi. And when we met we worked up a time when I could attend a five-week internship at the Joni and Friends International Disability Center at Agoura Hills, California. I completed the internship and am now finishing my degree in psychology at Mississippi College, a Christian university at Clinton, Mississippi.
